SCHOOL HOURS
7:30 am – Students can be dropped off in school cafeteria – Breakfast begins
7:50 am – Students report to classrooms
8:00 am – Instructional day begins *Tardy slips must be obtained at school office after 8:00 am
2:50 pm – Kindergarten dismissal
2:55 pm – First-Fifth Grade Dismissal for Carpool

SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND DRESS CODE POLICY
Information on how to order school supplies and the school dress code is located on the “School Store” tab on this website. If you pre order school supplies, they will be delivered to your child’s classroom before school starts.

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL
Please send your child to school with a backpack each day. You may want to pack a sack lunch the first few days of school until your child feels comfortable going through the lunch line. Hot lunch will be served on the first day of school.
BREAKFAST/LUNCH SERVICES
Free breakfast is served daily beginning at 7:30 a.m. Plate lunch including milk is $1.40. Students can pay for lunch with cash OR school issued lunch cards which can be pre paid in advance. Payments must be made in CASH to the HISD Food Services cashier in the cafeteria during drop off hours each morning.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES
Parents in all grades are encouraged to park and walk their children into the building. Parking is available in the Braes parking lot by the ball fields and on the side streets off Braes Blvd. The Underwood parking lot is reserved for KINDERGARTEN PARENTS.
- Kindergarten Procedures – Parents may park in the Underwood lot and walk their children into the building through the gate at the northwest corner of the building (by the Kindergarten playground). In the morning you may drop off your child in the classroom beginning at 7:50 a.m. In the afternoon you may wait outside the classroom and pick up at 2:50 p.m. Any student not picked up at that time will walk to the cafeteria with their teacher for carpool dismissal and extended day.
- All Other Grades – You may walk your child to their classroom and drop off beginning at 7:50 a.m. You may wait outside your grade level wing in the afternoon and pick up your child at the 2:55 dismissal time. After that time, all students in all grades will walk to the cafeteria with their teachers for carpool dismissal and extended day programs.
CARPOOL INSTRUCTIONS
The following guidelines are in place for arrival and dismissal at Mark Twain:

The carpool lane for drop-off and pick-up of all students in grades K-5 is located on Aberdeen (south side of school). Cars may enter only from the west bound lane of Aberdeen – turning right into the drop-off lane. Traffic heading east on Aberdeen will not be allowed to turn left into the drop-off lane.

If you choose to drop off your children, pull into the carpool lane and Safety Patrol students will direct the students to the cafeteria. There is no parking in the carpool lane and we ask that parents not leave their cars. Students will be allowed to exit cars only from the passenger side of the car.

Parents in grades 1-5 are encouraged to park and walk their children into the building. Parking is available in the parking lot on Braes Blvd. by the ball fields and on the side streets off of Braes. There is no parking on Braes Blvd. between Underwood and Aberdeen. There is also no parking allowed on Aberdeen between Braes and Stella Link.

Dismissal for all students in grades 1-5 is at 3:00 p.m. Students can be picked up at the classrooms or in the cafeteria at 3:00 p.m. If you choose to use the carpool lane, then you will enter the lane in the same manner as drop-off. Students will be called from the cafeteria and escorted to the cars. Parents must stay in their cars!
The parking lot on Aberdeen is for faculty and staff. Parent parking is not allowed!!!
AFTER SCHOOL EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM
Mark Twain offers students an Extended Instructional Day Program from 3:00 to 5:30. There is a cost for the after school program which is paid at the beginning of each semester. Spaces are limited and you must apply for this program through Jackie Black, magnet coordinator. At any time during the school year you may put your name on a waiting list and if spots become available they are filled in that order.
